Here at Active in Style, nothing gets us more excited than luxe activewear. Our love for bespoke prints in feminine hues and unique designs are high on our list of big-ticket-must-have-items in life. So when the two are combined, our love-o-metre is maxing out at an all time high.
Lucky for us, one brand that is doing it superbly well is VARLEY. The minute we laid eyes on the first collection some sixteen months ago, we knew we were going to be great friends with the sports-luxe activewear label (and so too were our customers). Fast-forward to today and as we make way for the fresh-as-a-daisy Spring Summer ’16 collection online and instore, we managed to talk to one part of the husband/wife duo, Lara Mead, about the collection, where she draws her inspiration from, and how living in LA has helped her inspire the London girl in a completely new way.
Read on to find out all the goss on our love affair with VARLEY.
Each collection sees new prints and styles come to life. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I think our main source of inspiration comes from travelling and our general surroundings. We spend half our year in California and the other half in Europe. I think this is a catalyst for the majority of our inspiration and creative outlook.
We are in LOVE with the SS16 collection. Do you have a top style pick you feel every girl needs to own? We know how popular the Sofia Leggings are!
I think the Sofia leggings are always going to be a huge hit as they’re such classics and look amazing with a tee shirt or a sweat for the gym but also on the school run. I wear mine to the office some days! I also love the Maberry tights as they are super high waisted and make me look a dress size smaller than I am, which is always a hit!
What would you say the most important thing a woman looks for when shopping for new activewear?
Quality. I think the quality of the fabric is so important as it’s got to install confidence; no women wants to be in the gym with a pair of leggings that offer no support and terrible coverage.
Secondly, wearability. In this busy society sometimes there is just no time to get changed in-between gym classes and doing the shopping, or meeting friends for drinks. Activewear shouldn’t just be for the gym.
What’s your biggest driving force to pushing the boundaries in the activewear space? Naturally, new brands are popping up everyday now, so what’s making VARLEY go from strength to strength?
If there was such a thing as a VARLEY girl, who would she be? To me, everything about the brand oozes elegance and confidence yet a free-spirit, adventure vibe. It makes me want to sip G&Ts by the pool after a workout!
We don’t have a ‘celebrity’ muse as such. However I think the VARLEY girl could be an array of women. All I know is she’s confident, stylish and content.
From London to LA. Has this direction helped shape and grow the brand as you can design based on the active lifestyle Californians are so synonymous for, then mixed back with the sophistication of Londoners?
It’s absolutely helped. I personally have an LA wardrobe and a London wardrobe. I like to think of VARLEY being the perfect hybrid between European elegance and Californian ease.
Lastly, what’s next for VARLEY? Got anything in the pipeline that we need to know about…
Kick fire questions…
Wake up time, the first thing you do, workout or leave that for later in the day?
As soon as I wake up I give my little boy a big kiss and cuddle. I then head out for a workout.
Breakfast of choice?
I make myself and my husband my ‘eggy hash’, it’s basically leftover vegetables, and sometimes chicken or turkey, fried in coconut oil and then mixed with eggs. It sounds so random, but it is delicious, especially when I throw in some chillies and fresh herbs. I also whizz myself up a maccachino in the blender, it’s almond milk, cocoa, macca powder, cinnamon, mestique.
If there was one workout you could do for the rest of your life what would it be?
The G14 workout when in London. G14 is a gym in London that I workout at, all the trainers are amazing, and their boxing classes are the best!! When in LA I love Glove Worx boxing, or LaGree fitness style pilates.
Your go-to workout outfit?
Has to be the Pacific Leggings teamed with a Terri Crop.
Best way to dress up a pair of leggings when you’re not exercising?
A big chunky cashmere sweater in London, and in LA a supersoft t-shirt tied at the side.
If there was one person you could catch up with over a power lunch who’d it be?
My husband! Although we sit next to each other in the office I feel like I barely see him. I’d love a lunch with him, no work and no baby. That would be a real treat.
