We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of a super busy afternoon, lunch was about 2 hours ago and dinner is way too far off. People are walking too slow, traffic is crazy, your phone won’t stop going off, your stomach is empty and blood sugars are low… You’re hangry. What do you go for? In a market saturated with ‘heathy’ snacks, like granola bars which are full of sugar, bags of snacks probably high in fats and sodium; it’s a minefield for the on-the-go snacker. As constant snackers and busy-bodies at AiS HQ, we were pretty excited when we discovered Hangry.
The Hangry team understand the emotional toll low glucose levels can have on your day, and developed a line of snacks to help you control your hangry troll inside with bars made from whole ingredients. To find out more, we caught up with Hangry founder, Louisa, to get the low down on how she came up with the solution to end all hanger.
For those who are new to the brand, What is Hangry and how did you bring it to life?
It all started with the word, hangry. Hangry is that moment when hunger and anger collide! It’s a growing social phenomenon, #hangry, so much so that it was officially added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2015.
Studies show that to keep hanger at bay, glucose levels must be kept stable. This gives you control over your reactions, your emotions and your hangry explosions! That’s why we formed Hangry bars designed to stabilise your glucose levels and help you ‘Snack Out Of It’ (our motto). Made from hand rolled and cold pressed fruit, oats, nuts and seeds, also known as our natural Hangry stabilising ingredients, the bars are free from dairy, wheat, refined sugars, syrups and vegetable oils. They are also vegan friendly.
Hangry has been brought to life through its branding and select distribution. We wanted to make the health market more fun and humorous, hence it’s bespoke Hangry characters and flavour names (I love a pun!)
To best introduce Hangry bars to market, we have been focusing on building it in cool coffee shops, whole food stores, health stores and select fitness spaces. We only launched in May this year, but I’m pleased to say it’s going from strength to strength. The brand never fails to spark laughter from our customers; we also get lots of compliments on the taste and texture of our products as well as the honest and simple ingredients.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given when launching a new snack brand?
To remember your point of difference! It’s a very competitive market so you need to ensure that this is reinforced.
How do you stay fit when working hard and developing a business?
It’s crazy busy running your own business, but I find I am my most productive when I have done something active. If I need to think things through, I will go to the gym and hit the cross trainer or treadmill. If I need a complete distraction, I will take a fitness class. Focusing on following the instructor’s next move allows me to take a ‘mental break’ from work. Plus, I find a group class brings out my competitive spirit and makes me work harder!
I’m also huge yoga fan. I was a keen gymnast, and so I like to practice yoga as it keeps my flexibility as well as building up my strength. So much so, I’m currently training to become a power yoga (ashtanga) teacher. I will be fully qualified come December, an early Christmas present to me… but more about my yoga plans later!
What is your best inspirational quote?
“Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.” – Ella Wheeler Wilcox, an American author and poet.
My Grandfather always used to say this to me as a child. It reminds me to smile more, be it at friends or strangers, I find it tends to be infectious.
What is your workout wear style?
Day to day, I tend to rock the monochrome look, especially as I’m normally dashing between meetings before getting to the gym, so I will still want to look relatively smart. At the weekends I tend to wear leggings with a more colourful print, again with a black or white sports top. I love a humorous quote on a top too.
What is your go to clean eating recipe?
You may have already guessed… but a Hangry bar of course! The Original Nutter I have been making for years, I love it with my morning coffee. Simply nibbled walnuts, cashews and almonds hand rolled and pressed with dates, gluten free oats and sunflower seeds. I have also become a little obsessed with making banana and coconut ice cream this summer. I cut up chunks of Hangry bars as a topping – so good!
What makes you Fit, Fearless and Feminine?
I’m fit because I’m active and enjoy working out. I recently read somewhere (probably on Instagram…) ‘that fitness should be a celebration of what your body can do, not a guilt ridden reaction to all the food you just ate’. So very true!
I may not feel it all the time, but starting up Hangry has certainly taught me to be more fearless, not only in business, but in all aspects of my life.
Femininity means a lot of different things to different people. In my opinion, I think my empathy makes me feminine. In fact, the foundation of Hangry is empathy really, isn’t it?
If Hangry were a person how would you describe its personality in 3 words?
Humorous, honest and healthy! (I clearly love a bit of alliteration too…)
